Pre Katrina vs. Post Katrina

In August of 2005, a natural disaster hit New Orleans that would forever change history. Hurricane Katrina made landfall as the 3rd strongest hurricane that was ever recorded on American soil. This hurricane was devastating to not only the environment, but also the people of New Orleans as well. Below are a few facts about Hurricane Katrina as well as pictures showing the difference between New Orleans before Katrina hit as well as New Orleans after Katrina hit.

  • Katrina hit as a Category 5 hurricane with winds up to 175 mph.
  • There are still at least 705 people today that are considered missing after Hurricane Katrina hit.
  • The death toll from Hurricane Katrina was 1,836 people.

Today, the affects of Hurricane Katrina are still able to be seen throughout New Orleans. Many of the restaurants, shops, and streets have been rebuilt since the hurricane happened. The local museum called the Prebytere contains information and articfacts from Hurricane Katrina as well. This museum contains videos, diaries, and even clothing from those who were affected by this horrible tragedy.  The Katrina National Park is a park that is in the process of being built in order to honor those that had to experience the devastating effects that Katrina left. The park is in the process of being built right here in New Orleans! Below is a link that includes more information about the process of building the Katrina National Park as well as information about the Katrina National Memorial Foundation.
